Be Bold. Be Brave. Be Beautiful. Be Aware. B! Inspired {Breast Cancer Awareness Month}

I started talking about breast cancer awareness month a bit over two years ago when my friends over at Estée Lauder and some of their sub companies sent me some lovely products which were in support of the much-needed campaign.

At the time I wrote that first post and review in 2012, I only knew one person battling breast cancer -- my cousin's Mother-in-Law. Last year's post and review of other brands trending in the same vein, was a happier one for me because all was quiet on that front -- she had survived her breast cancer in the most poetic way possible. And no new diagnoses by friends or family.

But this year rings in a different tone. I thought I'd be able to write this post with jovial reviews of another year of beauty companies offering their proceeds of certain lush items to the fighting cause. But I'm not. In the last 3 months, two friends, both in their mid-30s were diagnosed with breast cancer -- one in stage 2; the other in stage 3. The former decided to have them both removed -- a bold and brave move I can't even wrap my emotional mind around. The former had to relocate to Miami to be with her parents as she undergoes chemo and eventual mastectomy.

But a 3rd case was most devastating and brought new meaning to this cause for me personally. A college friend buried her sister this past Monday after losing her fight to breast cancer. I didn't know my friend's sister, but I'm crushed for her. I can't imagine her pain. Her pain in knowing that her sister will no longer laugh with her but also that her sister was taken from her by a disease so ruthless but not powerful. That her nieces will rely on their auntie to help them develop into young women who will one day understand the perils of cancer.

And so I'm brining you these goodies this year with new intention --- and that's to encourage you to go beyond the pretty; beyond the lovely colors; the awesome effect of wearing them. It's to look at the organizations and the efforts to help eradicate the deadly disease. A really ugly one that's not fair and does not discriminate.

These few items, among others, are committed to the cause and are donating proceeds to various foundations, mostly the Susan G. Komen.

Clinique has come out again with their Dramatically Different Moisturizing+ Lotion. I started last year's breast cancer awareness bottle and am almost done, so perfect timing for another one! Love it, clearly. It's my first-thing-in-the-morning moisturizer.  Estée Lauder has partnered up with Elizabeth Hurley to fight breast cancer with a Dream Pink Collection faux leather pouch with two super cute mini lacquers and a lipstick. Love the colors once I painted my mom's nails. She looks all sassy in the 'Berry Hot' pink. 20% of proceeds from the $30 ticket price go to the SGKF.

“This limited-edition pink shade of gloss is our promise to never stop working towards finding a cure for a disease that affects so many women in our lives.”                                                     - Davis Factor, Smashbox Founder and Celebrity Photographer

And finally, I'm loving on what I think is going to be my fall go-to lip gloss when I don't want to wear makeup. I'm a huge fan of Smashbox eyeliners but this shimmery 'Be Legendary' gloss looks like something I can get used stocking up. I've not tried it, but a sweet, sweet friend jellied me up telling me it's super sweet -- "non-sticky, nice shimmer without too glossy and lasts just long enough." I'll get one more myself and let you know how great it is!

Bobbi Brown's got some stuff; so does Joe Malone -- my fave every day perfumier. And so does Jergens.... a great lotion I like traveling with. Can't tell you how it is or if their Breast Cancer Awareness edition is formulated differently, but they've got something in support of, and that's worth looking into.

We can all do our part by supporting our favorite brands and picking up a prod or two that will benefit  education and research.

Be bold. Be beautiful. But be aware.

{Beauty Bloom} Go Pink. Fight Like a Girl. It's Breast Cancer Awareness Month

I try to stay away from medical and health campaigns... I've learned myself and come to the realization I'm a bit skeptic of the fundraising. Of all the walks, runs, money, time, and effort donated to foundations that work to find a cure for this, that, or the other. While I've never personally investigated where the money really goes, I'm always still curious of where it ends up. In 40+ plus years, we've really NOT found a cure for the various cancers, AIDS, MS, etc... life-threatening illnesses? All the millions, sometimes billions of $$ shared... I don't know.

Since I'm no funding police or medical expert to know the intensity and deep research and pockets needed to finally kill these diseases, I try to remain hopeful, positive, and optimistic that progress, noticeable progress is continually made. I've done 2 hard-core bike rides and marathons in support of various medical research. And will do more. It's a powerful undertaking.

This month is Breast Cancer Awareness. It's a bold fight against an ugly cancer that's taken the lives of many women... for we are the crux of society. Without women, there simply would not be humankind. Yes, it's true. I wasn't fully sensitive to cancer and its impact until a few years ago when my cousin's mother in law, who I'm sure I've mentioned in last year's BCA beauty post, was diagnosed with breast cancer. My mother, a selfless soul and the epitome of hustler, put her life on hold for 9 months and saved Xiomara's life. Literally. I won't go into detail on how it all happened, but Xiomara is now a breastless survivor. No tatas, but she has a life. A full life ahead of her.

And, while not breast cancer, another woman, distantly close to me also has cancer. I don't know her very well, but I know some of what she's enduring.

Through those two women whom I personally know and have spent time with as family, I've set aside my skepticisms and am more conscious of the national and international efforts. The came in many ways. May way of supporting is right here. Sharing messaging on my blog about relevant and effective campaigns that align with my lifestyle.

Every year, thousands of conscious brands and companies launch campaigns to bring real time awareness to research and saving lives. I've now been working with Estée Lauder companies in sharing their contribution. They epitomize beauty, so it's only fitting I see what they've come up with and let you know about it!

Part of their lineup this year (though last year's was pretty sexy! See my review here) is pretty simple. Their star product for this year's campaign actually works!

Yay and yay! I swear I'm on the most fervent mission to find the right products to beautify and restore my skin. Stress is taking a toll on it! (this one is on the fore right now-- findings in about 60 days)

The Advanced Night Time  Repair serum is the face of their campaign this year and for me it's a gem. I've been applying it every night for the past three weeks and my skin, lacking major hydration and proper rest and sleep, feels amazing and looks about 60% better. Beat up skin at my age is not sexy or attractive. Stress affects my skin in a way no one wants to fight. It's my fault. I come from good genes, so I'm in total control of how I treat it. Mainly made up of catabolysis technology which is clinically proven to naturally purify skin the way it's supposed to during rest, the serum is created to cleanse and synch our skin's nighttime renewal process. If you get little sleep, this helps. I'm experimenting here for real.

This synchronized recovery complex II is made for women like me:::: we grind 14 hours a day, get little sleep, drink lots of espresso to stay away, don't drink enough water, and don't always squeeze in a proper workout to destress...that's me. All of me, every day. And sure enough, if I keep it up, my early 30s look will be mirroring a 45 year instead! Yeah, not so happening! I'm slathering this with some Retinol cream I have... so far, the cocktail works.

I'm also loving their Pure Color "rubelite" stick paired with the "Hot Pink" sheer roller gloss (if I could have 20 of these, I so would! Love, love, love them). Both come in this cute, and totally practical (I use it for electronic cables when traveling) pink case.

The EL serum is on the skincare side of efforts. But we all want beautifying goodies, too! So I scoured and scoured and came across Shiseido (one of my all-time brands since I was 20 finally connected with). They put out a oh-so-pretty and perfectly pretty pink lacquer rouge in Diva. It's vibrant and stays.

Put.

In their effort, they've partnered up with Cosmetic Executive Women. For every lip gloss purchased ($25), $5 will be donated to their philanthropic arm... a 7 year partnership focused on saving lives through pretty things! I'm all for it!

They've shared a telling infographic which'll help understand the impact of breast cancer and their journey in supporting with our pretty lips!

Soooo girlies. Take care of your skin and pucker your lips with a serious cause. Few things feel better than to do good and help others even if it's through our own little daily desires.

Fight like a girl!

Peace, love, health, and blessings!

{Beauty Bloom} Best Pressed, Bronzing & Light Powders for Fall

Estée Lauder's Translucent Powder.

I'm obsessed with pressed powder. It's my beautifying saving grace. Then mascara. I'm always on the hunt for solid powders that offer amazing coverage without creating an awfully caked up look. If I can get away from wearing foundation unless I'm on TV, then that powder is the one for me.

In my in-counter experience over the last few weeks, I've been testing some new ones out so I can give my good old faithful, Clinique's Stay Matte a break (though seriously... that stuff is great!), I found these three to really work well for me for different reasons.

SHISEIDO SUN PROTECTION SPF 35

Not only is the lemon yellow packing pretty and comes in three designs, but the light foundation offers the most perfect even coverage which gives your skin a flawless glow! It's perfectly blended with a high percentage of sun blockage which makes this vibrant compact ideal for end of summer and fall application.  Use this and don't bother with liquid foundation OR powder. I need a big bucket of this for the rest of the year.

ESTÉE LAUDER AFTER HOURS LUCIDITY TRANSLUCENT

Don't mind the demure and classy enamel casing... mind the ease and easy access to touching up while at dinner with your beau. You've already applied your makeup and just need to do a bit of dabbing to clear the oily spots or highlight your cheeks. Use a regular blush brush though it comes with small puff... Also comes in a small velvet pouch for dainty carrying.

BOBBI BROWN ILLUMINATING BRONZING POWDER

Fall is literally a week or two away and those sexy tans are fading. Our complexing will revert to its normal tone  in no time and we'll all be begging for some extra color. I found this bronzing powder in 'Aruba' and slathered it all over to make sure it was my default for weekends! It's the perfect color for someone my complexion, giving me a natural look and not like I was tanning. It's gorgeous. Shimmer, great color and a great size make this bronzing powder a fabulous alternative to every day toned powder. This comes in various colors and now I wish I would have gotten the 'Santa Barabara' color! It's so luscious.

So see, there's something for all of us! We loved the idea of going light or even makeup free all summer but it's now time to cover up some of those sun damages (hopefully not much at all) and imperfections from the hot elements!

All on counters right now... and under $40.

What are you looking for in pressed powders? Any favorites you've come across?

{Beauty Bloom} Loving on my nails. Differently.

(A Different Nail Enamel... Limited Summer Collection)

Summer is here! Well, it's supposed to be anyway. DC is having crazy Fall weather, as low as the 50s and some wind. But in my earnest effort to embrace the hot weather, I'm having fun with all the season's beauty products. Especially the bright colored ones. Aside from mascara and the perfect pink lip, nail color is 3rd most important in my look. I'm getting ready to hit a summer TV tour cooking on air with Madria Sangria, and my mani is always in the spotlight. I looove a beautiful color when I'm moving around my station. They just great on camera (see this segment).

And since my hands are always in food, raw, cooked, fresh, frozen, etc... my nails are exposed to every possible element. I keep them polished as often as I can which puts chemical stress on them. And you, too! And, did you know we touch our eyes up to 200 times a day?! With all those those things my hands come in contact with, my eyes are susceptible to infections, irritation, etc.... Even nail color can cause eye and skin problems. No one wants that, right.

Clinique's new line addresses potential sensitivities to the eyes and skin. Their R & D yielded a really beautiful permanent and limited collection of enamels that women can rock without worrying about their fresh mani's turning into a bumpy cheek or eye blisters. And the ultra thin brush makes it easier to to do at-home mani's... or in my case, in the car on my way to meetings. Classic applications in my life!

I've been playing with the sexy 9 bottle summer collection and am in total lust with these four colors. A confetti with these colors for my 1st appearance may be too much, but I'm all over it for my 2nd.

(strappy sandals; grape ice; juiced up; hula skirt -- via my Instagram)

Check out both collections... and if you're obsessed with all things pretty, you'll want at least 3 colors from each. I'm working on finding Really Rio and Black Honey from the perm line.

Both are avail now on counters nationwide.

What's your fave?
