NIKE: 10 Years in San Fran... With Black and Gold

“Inspiration from this project came from Bricolage, a genre of art I’ve been wanting to experiment with, where every piece has purpose within the larger installation,” said Kate McCollough, X Collection trunk designer and artist. “We wanted to create something beautiful and luxurious that every female runner wants and needs. There is an air of decadence and unwavering confidence that meets the practicality and vigor of the women who run the Nike Women’s Marathon in San Francisco.”

Where were you exactly 10 years ago? I think I was sitting up in a law firm in DC, pushing paper, suited up in Donna Karan and Elie Tahari, catching cabs to DC's Superior Court, filing injunctions, etc...Seriously. That was my life as a law school-drop out turned awesome corporate paralegal. I was about my business. And I was working out like a crazy woman obsessed with my body. I'd spend a lot of lunch hours in the raggedy building gym, sweating off my SlimFast.

And I cycled long distance. I loved it more than anything. I've never been an athlete by any dictionary definition, but I've enjoyed the idea of staying fit and pushing my body. I fell off about 5 years ago and haven't fully recovered from lethargy, though I do trapeze, hit the occasional yoga and pilates class, and walk 3 miles a few times a week.

Or wake up one morning and run my first ever 1/2 marathon. Like a crazy woman obsessed with my body. I did that in April and felt equally amazed as I did 11 years ago when I rode 350 miles in support of AIDs efforts in DC.

It doesn't require being an athlete, but it does require a certain level of commitment to push your body in a way you didn't really know you could. Nike will do that to you. I experienced it for myself. They push athletes. But they also push people like me.

Wannabes.

A decade later, they're still pushing us, women, to run and run for a cause. Next Sunday, 30k women will congregate in San Francisco and run the famous marathon. I had every intention to make it out west and run it, with little training, but life got in the way, and I have to be in NY with a client. But, I'm so there in spirit. I've been following the progress and stories on their FB page and totally get it!

As with any event making it to 10 years of existence, the celebration has to be pretty spectacular. And since Nike doesn't really do anything half-way, (I mean, who gives out Tiffany necklaces as the "medal" other than they?), I was not surprised to see their commemorative black and gold trunk for the race. It's full of amazingness in fashion, design, and practicality! It embodies symbols of Nike, the goddess of Victory, 10 years in the way of 10 drawers with engraved numbers for each yea, and other sassy details.

And they also put out a full collection of training and race day wear. Of course, my fave would be the wedge sneakers. And then these perfectly hued  Free Flynit+. Both were designed for the decade party and yep, working on my getting my size 8 foot in both. A girl can never have too many fly sneakers. Seriously.

If I were in SF next weekend, I'd make sure to Instagram and Tweet the entire thing, while pushing through 26 miles of awesome challenges, but since I won't, I'll cheer on from NY and hope the girls the best! It's really an impressive moment. A memorable accomplishment. I can't wait for it to come back to DC!

Check out the entire race collection here. You'll love it.

We Run DC! Why I Ran The Nike 1/2 Marathon

A view from my corral on my iPhone.
It's been 9 days since the inaugural Nike Women's Marathon series in DC where 15,000 turned up and ran their hearts out. I'm assuming most women are fully recovered from the grueling pain and have moved on to the next thing. Ask me how I'm doing and my answer will give you the impression I've just spent 2 weeks in Disney doing it up.

I'm still enjoying a super high of emotion, completely tickled, but more proud and humbled I ran and finished my first 1/2 marathon ever. Oh, yes, and I'm still in pain. My feet took a beating. They're all bruised up, are sore and I can barely run more than 2.5 miles.

Me? Run?

Okay, so let's put it out there. I hate running. It hurts, gives me awful headaches, seems to never end, doesn't yield the weight loss effect I hear associated with it, and quite frankly, I've never seen the point in putting your knees through the grinder. Who does that? And where are you going? And why are you so concerned with going so fast?!

I swear this has been my attidtude toward running for about 15 years. I loathed it and gave it no importance in my fitness life. Everyone around me knows this.

So, you're reading this with the most confused face wondering why I ran 13.1 miles. I kind of had to ask myself the same thing last Sunday morning when my alarm went off at 4:45 am. I hit snooze and got a bit more shut eye. Surely, I was not prepared to run with 15,000 other women, most of who I'm sure trained.

Unlike me.

The Decision to Run...

I committed to running the race back in Feb. At the time, the idea sounded amazing and I got really excited. I even ran 2.5 miles on the treadmill while on a short family staycation 2 hours from home. I downloaded the Nike Training Connect app on my phone and did 2 workouts that weekend. I was pshyched.

I even harassed a veteran running friend to help me figure this out. He took me out on one single 2.5 mile run where I almost collapsed in front of him. He quickly tried to discourage me from trying this race.

And Not Train.

And then I went Australia for 3 weeks. I packed my purple Air Pegasus but they never saw the light of day. And then I went off to St. Croix for 6 days.  In between those two trips, I suffered a hip injury and the idea of running was the last thing on my mind. Still, I kept boasting of how I was going to run my 1st 1/2 marathon. My father, in his kindest, yet most sarcastic tone suggested I was kidding myself if I thought I was going to run 13 miles without passing out.

So just 2 days after I returned from 4 weeks of traveling, absolutely no training, and piercing hip and knee pain, I geared up for the run. I went to the media festivities where the colorful expotique was set up. I bumped into friends, visited the massive new Niketown store right on the heart of Georgetown, and grabbed my runners packet. I even got a few cute DC shirts to run in.  Oh, and those highly coveted We Run DC sneakers commemorating the race.

Yep. I scooped up a pretty little pair.

I still had no idea what I was getting into.

Dad and me after finishing (on my iPhone).
On Sunday morning.

At about 5:50, everything changed. I arrived downtown, saw an exodus of women and knew I had to do this. The energy was wildly infectious and positive. I've never been to a race of that size so seeing thousands of women getting ready to take on the streets I know so well, Nike's brand everywhere, loads of workers and volunteers directing us in the proper direction, and the start gate was moving. We all had one mission: to cross that line and raise money for Leukemia/Lymphoma.

What did me in was the backdrop: Our Capitol. I've always been in awe of that building. Seeing it brighten up as the sun rose shook me a bit. I was getting ready to run 13.1 miles in my hometown. I was running for the 1st time. And I was empowered by the mass of cheers and inspiration.

I made my way with a steady pace through Rock Creek Parkway, passed the Kennedy Center, through Haines Point where I used to hang when I was in HS and almost tapped out at the final stretch up Penn ave, approaching the Capitol and back around the botanical gardens.

I crossed the finish line all by myself, not expecting anyone there (remember my dad didn't think I was going to actually do it, my sister thought I was kidding, and my mother thought I was crazy) in 2:40:12, as I timed it on my phone. Official race time clocked me at 2:40:04... a whole 8/10ths of a second faster! Woot.

The Finish.

The only thing waiting for me was a studly young man, clad in a black tux, holding a silver tray with pretty little blue boxes, courtesy of Tiffany & Co. For us... a lovely "medal" necklace with an etched female runner emblematic of each of us and the race name on the other side to reward our effort.

My dad and aunt surprised me at the VIP lounge with nothing but smiles after they picked up their jaw! They were in shock. I didn't call them at the 6 mile marker begging them to come pick me up.

I really finished a 1/2 marathon! With existing injuries. And no training. What, what! In one piece with no displaced hip? No headaches or oblique cramps??

Our "medal" in the little blue box taken on my iPhone
While jumping for joy-- no mind I was in shock and in utter pain -- and trying on my necklace, I heard a local black woman won the race. Samia Akbar knocked it out and up in 1:19.  I caught a quick glimpse of her looooooong, beautiful legs in the VIP lounge and had to meet her.  Our 10 minute conversation and her generous hug applauding my personal inaugural run was the icing on the cake. I congratulated and thanked her for the awesome inspiration. The race took on a new meaning at that moment.

I was thrilled for her and more excited it all happened right here. I spoke with Samia  a few days ago so I can't wait to share our convo about running, minority women in track & field and what shoes she loves to rock when not in sneakers!

Why I ran.

I ran because there are a group of amputated kids my sister works with every summer who would run 26.2 miles if they could. I ran for them and anyone who would do anything to engage in the physical activities I'm able to do, but can't.  I ran for my SIL-to-be who's a Lukemia survivor. I ran for my mother who has chronic arthristis in her knees and can barely walk 2 miles without crying. I ran because it was in DC and the power it implies permeated into my spirit of determination.

I ran for me. I ran because I can.

And for that little blue box!
Excited at runner's stage via my Instagram
I learned and proved to myself that we really, really can do anything we put our minds to. I challenged myself to do something I've so long turned down and dismissed, convincing myself I couldn't do it. I've never broken 5 miles at one time. This was huge!  And I did it.

Nike did me a huge favor last week. They opened up my heart and mind to my body. I love it more than ever before. I have this renewed sense of treating it right. To using it the best way I can and to help others.

They say just do it. Seriously. Just do it

I did.

And now I'm gearing up for the San Francisco 1/2 in Oct. ;)

Wondering if that bib will also have my exact birthday numbers. Because yes, it's not coincidence my 1st ever bib was my birthday number, I don't think! ;)

B! Inspired.

Feeling Like an Insider...

I shared a picture of this uberly fabulous wedge platform sneaker by Nike today on my Facebook wall and a fun friend was quick to rhetorically ask "You... B? In tennis shoes?" I chuckled at her question because I'm certain she speaks for many of my friends. But truth is, I really do wear sneakers and more than you'd ever imagine. One caveat, though... they have to be super fly for me to really rock them. Apart from the necessary running shoes, any sneaker occupying valuable closet real estate must come with it. Be bold and beautiful. The culprit for double-takes.

Naturally, I lost my composure when these bad girls showed up at my door today. Unannounced. I pulled the drawstring bag open and found them staring right at me.

I wasn't anticipating them, but knew they were recently released. As genius as they are, Nike has simply outdone themselves this time.

In honor of the 5 major cities hosting international fashion week, Nike debuted the Dunk Sky High City Pack collection. Each design represents a distinct vibe from each city -- Milan, Paris, Tokyo, London and New York.

Let's talk about my red London ones real quick. Spartan pattern, tattered fabric in a perfect layering patter and a green patent leather swoosh. Without trying, the sneaker is high glam.

If I had to have a 2nd pair --- and knowing me, I'll scavenger the nation -- the Milan version would take my breath away. Literally mirrored after the city's lux and lush culture, the sneaker makes sense having croc embossed leather and chocolate suede juxtaposed with a supple gold swoosh. Nike's own blog couldn't have described this one any better. In fact, it's total confirmation they need to be on my feet:
If you start your day off with a cappuccino, you’ll love the Nike Dunk Sky Hi Milan
It's as if they were speaking to me directly. They are watching my moves.

Surprisingly, the Paris didn't strike me as having to have...initially. but only because it's delicate white cloth material would soil too fast for my pockets. Because yes, I'd be wearing them quite often. The design is still thoroughly executed. On second thought... as I type, I see a very Chanel-eque sneaker. It's all in the details.

New York had to ultra simple with an all black pair... a monotone city requires a sleek shoe that speaks for itself. Of all the designs, this one's the most classic and can be enjoyed whenever, wherever, for whatever reason. I'm seeing mini skirt, blazers and fabulous arm candy with this one.

Here's where my heart sinks with a slight bit of disspointment. Just a slither. The Tokyo pair did absolutely nada for me. The neutral color just makes it another netrual color shoe -- though I'm thinking it's a nice deviation from Nike's tradition. And the iridescence? Uhm, not my style. Perhaps they're stunning in person, but in the pics... I'd rather have seen a crazy pattern swoosh that showcased Japan's culture. This may be a stretch, but even an origami style cherry blossom tree sketch? That'd be kind of haute, no?

I'm falling in love with the sports apparel culture all over again. As much I'm spending my time in the gym, training for the Nike Women's 1/2 Marathon (more on that this week), my weekly trapeze and other physically challenging activities, I'm creating space for more comfy clothes; stuff I can run errands in and still be chic.

These shoes right here... yes.. there's no reason not to consider rocking some insanely awesome kicks!

They debuted March 27th in select boutiques nationwide. Limit one per customer. $225.

Sexy Shoe Sunday: NIKE Animal Print Kicks

I dated a guy once who told me he didn't like women who like animal print.

Oh my! Who says that? And how emo is he?

Surely, he couldn't appreciate deeper things about me if he was focused on frivolous details like my attraction to most things animal print.

I say, sucks to be so close-minded.

So, the irony of this post is that he loved to insist I wear more sneakers. Didn't mind my stilettos, especially these, but he loved the idea of seeing me in more sneakers. I alluded to owning these and that in due time, regardless of his insistence, I'd buy some more. I just needed the right opportunity.

And so it has come and he's gone!

What a joke, right?!

I spent some time with NIKE back in October and got to hang out with two of their top trainers and coaches. I've always been a huge fan of the company's motto -- JUST DO IT! -- but I was more inspired to keep my fitness level up to an unseen degree. Between all the working out I do, I've been spending more time in my running and cross-training shoes.

But, I wanted a pair that would not only double as running-around-the-town-sporty-chick, but would also have some fun and wild flair.

These 'Low Dunk Skinny's' did it!

I've loving everything about the dark brown "henna"spots with the bright orange NIKE name against the black leather.  They're fashionable without losing their athletic appeal and practical use. They're sturdy, have great stability, but you have to wear them at least 5 times to really break them in.

I'm wearing these today with some leggings, a sleeveless couture hoodie and a funky knit hat and fringed scarf (working on getting back to my own street style, something I love and really the basis for this blog). Balance.

Roar on girlfriends. Even if in your sneakers. Because any real girl knows she can't be in heels 24/7.

Do you have casual yet sexy sneakers? Which ones?!

Flat is Fly! For the Unfortunate Situation

If you're a girl like me and don't wear flats unless you're chasing the dog or running to the mailbox, flat shoes don't really take up real estate in the closet. But, sometimes the most of unfortunate and untimely accidents happen that force us to consider perusing the flat section... and they must be on sale!

I sprained my ankle almost 4 weeks ago and have only worn heels twice... and those two fabulous times turned out to be a miserable aftermath. Shooting pain in my heel has taken over and I've now resigned to using crutches while I heal.

Yes, I'm on crutches. So while my Dr. sis has put me on foot rest and instructed me to stay off any kind of sexy stiletto, I've been pretending to want to own some flats. I did some virtual shopping and found some really cute options! I'd actually wear all of these... now.

After getting over the idea of having to wear flats for a few more weeks, I went to my closet and actually found a few pair...most of which hadn't seen my feet in more years than I can remember. These two are faves and not bad options for everyday styling.

If I was bold enough to spend $170 (on sale) on the fabulously chic leopard print Kate Spade one's, I might, just might get really excited about flats!

Flat can be Fly!

How do you rock your flats? Share a link to your fave pair! I want to see what you like!
